The Biden administration launched a new effort in May 2022 calledthe Trusted Adult Relative Program. This program tries to reunify children with trusted family members (who are not the child’s parents) as quickly as possible after being separated at the U.S. border.

If a child and adult relative travel together to the U.S. border, they will initially be separated so that immigration officials can check to make sure the adult is a relative that the child knows and that the potential sponsor can take care of the child. If the relative passes this verification, the child and relative can typically be reunited within roughly 10 days. Then, they can together go through regular immigration proceedings.

We will update this page as more information becomes available.
